Coraline (2009): Halloween

October 12, 2018

Making up a review about Coraline. It's brilliant, it's perfect, it's a favorite of mine! This film is so wonderful. It follows a young girl named Coraline who moves and is being neglected by her busy parents. She wishes for a world where her parents had more time for her. She and a neighbor, "Wybie" frequently explore the area around their apartment  with a black cat. One evening while exploring, Coraline finds an alternate reality where her parents are attentive and loving. Despite warnings against it, Coraline frequently visits the Other World, drawn in by the love and support from the Other Mother. She quickly realizes that this Other World is merely smoke and mirrors and she must escape before she is forced to remain there. This movie is Laika's best in my opinion, and it's perfect for Halloween. It's the right amount of scary and heartfelt, with some lovely chilling scenery. My favorite thing about Laika films is that despite being animated and appealing to children they aren't afraid to explore dark themes. This is an October must! Put it on during a foggy evening and prepare to get spooked.
