Rushmore (1998): Back to School
August 13, 2018
This Wes Anderson film follows a high school student, Max, who has a scholarship to an elite private school, Rushmore. His grades are poor due to his obsessive commitment to extra curricular activities. Max meets the father of two of his classmates, Herman Blume, who is a bored, depressed, business tycoon and the two begin to bond. A fissure occurs when they both fall for the same woman, a teacher at Rushmore named Rosemary Cross. She and Herman begin dating, but hide it from Max. When Max discovers their secret he and Herman begin a war of vengeful acts against each other. Meanwhile, Max is expelled from Rushmore and is forced to begin at a public school, where he absolutely does not fit in. This movie is very quirky, as most Anderson films are, but this is one of the most... purposefully quirky? By that I mean it doesn't seem to be eccentric just for the heck of it, there is a purpose behind the character quirks. I definitely recommend checking this film out to get ready for autumn and back to school season.
