Mermaids (1990): Mother's Day
May 8, 2018
Mermaids is one of my favorite movies of all time; this movie features Cher and Winona Ryder as Rachel and Charlotte, a mother and daughter whose lifestyles clash. Rachel goes through flings with men, and when it doesn't work out, she relocates the family to a new state. Charlotte resents her mother and wants to be a nun. Charlotte's desires directly oppose her mother's lifestyle but begin to change once she develops a crush on a boy. Meanwhile, her little sister Kate, played by a young Christina Ricci, is obsessed with swimming and all things aquatic. The movie follows Charlotte's adolescent struggles as well as Rachel's relationship woes and is an excellent display of a family's love despite their conflicts and differences. I think this is a great mother-daughter movie, and I recommend watching it with your mom if you want to laugh and cry.
