High School Musical (2006): Back to School

We're SOOOOARIN.... back to school. So of course no back to school movie list would be complete without High School Musical, a musical about kids who want to audition for the school musical. How meta. This movie is 10 years old and I honestly can't believe it because I was but a youngin when it came out. I was a little too old to be a part of the hardcore obsession but I do remember the words to every song so I mean... I know it. This movie is cute, it was a phenomenon, so I feel like you have to kind of appreciate it as a piece of pop culture. However it has its flaws and while I don't think they're glaring, they're there. I honestly much prefer High School Musical 2, because while it's gaudy and showy and loud and terrible it almost seems to know it and just steer into the skid. As I said in my review of HSM2, HSM is cute, HSM2 is art. Also, just like in HSM2 (and I'm assuming 3, I never actually saw that one, I was too old by then) Lucas Grabeel is the best part of the movie. This movie will definitely get you ready to bop to the top of your class (...I'm so sorry).
