Gilmore Girls [A Year in the Life]: Summer

“Summer” A Year in the Life, Episode 3
So, as a dedicated Gilmore Girls fan, I have to say the revival was a little bittersweet for me. I think sometimes it's better not to know how things went. It's better to imagine how things might have gone in your mind. I always thought season 7 ended very well. I didn't like the season itself, but I thought it ended well. And I think time and maturity (and actually living an adult life) made me see the flaws in the show I hadn't noticed before.
This was my least favorite episode of the revival. It felt like the characters were putzing around; none of the plots seemed essential to me. Like the musical, I feel like they just wanted a reason to include Sutton Foster. I don't know... they're also just obnoxious; Lorelai and Rory are just sitting at the pool shit-talking people who are kind to them. Meanwhile, Rory consistently refuses to acknowledge how little she lived up to her potential. She takes over the Stars Hollow Gazette and still feels as though the job is beneath her. The best part of this episode is when Michel lets Lorelei know he has found another job. It was very emotional and wonderful acted by both.
As for the purpose of this blog, this episode is set during the summer, and it does have some seasonal touches that we don't usually see in Stars Hollow. There is a lot of time spent at the pool, there are lots of pretty sunhats and dresses, and the heat is mentioned. While this episode has some summer imagery but kind of drags. It's not the first summer-themed episode I'd watch, that's for sure. I think there are plenty of better episodes and movies to watch if you want to get in the mood for the season.
