Scream (1996): Halloween
October 29, 2017
I always say it’s impossible to have one favorite movie, but gun to my head, this is it for me. I saw this movie for the first time when I was 14, and it kicked off my love affair with horror movies. I had never felt the need for them before then because they all seemed so gratuitously gory or violent. And then I saw this. And it was self-aware and funny while still having some satisfying scares. Since the time was pre-google, if you were interested in something, you had to seek out sources; so I got books about horror movies from the library and learned everything I could about this movie. Because this movie referenced other classic horror movies, I felt the need to watch those too. Eventually, I fell down the rabbit hole and turned into the horror freak that I am today. And I have this film and Wes Craven to thank for that. So, now, why should you watch this movie to get ready for Halloween? Because it’s a horror movie that loves horror movies. It’s scary, and tongue in cheek and is great for some light-hearted Halloween fun. While it’s not actually set during Halloween, I always think a good slasher is a safe bet to get you in the mood for the spookiest night of the year.
